RSLSteeper SCAMP Hands provide an affordable option for powered prosthetic hands for children. SCAMP is the lightest, lowest-cost electric hand available for infants and children. These hands have a simple control mechanism - opened by a motor and closed by a spring. This Voluntary Open (VO) control scheme is relatively easy for young children to master.

SCAMP Hands are available in two sizes; 1¾” and 2” The small hand, suitable for children 0-3 years of age, weighs just 5 ounces (143 grams) including the wrist, and just 6.6 ounces with the glove. Width across the knuckles is slightly less than 1¾” (42 mm). The 2” SCAMP for 2-6 year olds weighs 5.2 ounces (148 grams) with the wrist and just over 7 ounces (200 grams) with the glove. It is 2” (51 mm) across the knuckles. SCAMP is so light that an infant can wear it even before he or she is ready to control it. Parents and therapists like it because the spring force between the fingers and thumb is easy to override - very helpful when attempting to place an object into the child’s hand. Once the infant gets used to wearing a prosthesis, it can then be activated.

SCAMP Hands can be controlled by a one-muscle myoelectrode or if myo control doesn’t come easily, a single miniature harness-mounted pull switch can be substituted.

SCAMP Hands are often used with LTI Built-in Batteries because of their small size and light-weight. An alternative would be the Compact 6 (BP92). These removable, rechargeable batteries are convenient for children to carry and should provide sufficient energy to power a SCAMP hand all day.
