Battery Chargers/Evaluators

The LTI Fast Charger features intelligent circuitry that rapidly charges nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) battery packs from LTI, RSLSteeper, or Otto Bock to their maximum charge capacity. The Fast Charger’s control circuitry continuously monitors the battery’s charge status, and terminates the fast charge when the battery reaches maximum voltage. It then trickle-charges the batteries, topping them off to their maximum capacity. This topping-off process is healthy for batteries. It generally results in a higher level of charge, providing more operating time on the prosthesis.

When Ni-Cd batteries are not fully exercised, they may develop a “memory,” which effectively reduces their maximum charge capacity to the lower level habitually used. To avoid this loss of capacity and ensure that the cells can always provide their full charge, LTI Fast Chargers have a button that discharges the battery cells to a safe level before recharging. Two or three discharges per month generally prevents the memory problem.

The unit is equipped with indicator lights that tell what mode it’s in and the state of charge. The charger can also detect and indicate a bad cell in the battery pack. Each Fast Charger unit is supplied with a detachable, UL-approved power transformer for general use, and an automotive cigarette lighter adapter for charging battery packs in a vehicle.

Type-S built-in batteries are configured with the cells in a compact bundle. They have a separate on/off switch and recharge connector, which can be placed remote from the cells. Fast Chargers for built-in batteries will be supplied with the newer S-Type connector unless otherwise specified. Order the appropriate battery and charger combination.
